Fundamental Correctness in Boxing
Imagine you took your child to school one morning and your child's teacher insisted the child began his or her alphabet with the letter M. The same teacher insists your child began counting to ten starting at five. Last but not least, your kids teacher insisted the kid learn to write in script before they learn to print. Would you be alarmed? This is what has been happening in American boxing since 1988. We have digressed. We are confused. Through my many years as a boxer and today as a trainer, I have always understood that in order to be a good teacher, one must first establish what is correct, incorrect and what is a variation of correctness.
All sports have "established" fundamentals, including boxing. EXAMPLE: Teaching boxers their stance. Where does a motor go on a boat? On the back of course. How else can the boat be propelled? It can't. So therefore a boxer should keep more weight on his or her back foot than the front. This is FUNDAMENTAL. As my Mom would say "common sense"! I believe there is a correct way to do every aspect of boxing. From teaching how to get in a stance, to moving in all four directions while executing all ten punches correctly. I believe its common sense. Then there are variations of these fundamentals a good teacher must recognize and be able to teach in order to blend them with a boxer's natural abilities. I call this FUNDAMENTAL CORRECTNESS. It is not a style, it is a philosophy.
Something which is alarmingly needed today in our great sport to compete at an elite level. Boxers in this country are losing to the rest of the world because our teachers have been teaching half the alphabet! They have started counting to ten beginning at five and they're trying to write script before learning to print. We seem to have lost our way. Our greatest hope of recovery is with our amateur program. Starting here is common sense. I continue giving clinics wherever summoned with my counterparts, in hope of resurrecting the ability and knowledge to teach this philosophy. There is an art in teaching the sweet science. It begins with FUNDAMENTAL CORRECTNESS! VARIATIONS MEAN NOTHING IF NOT GROUNDED IN COMMON SENSE!!!
